Ankle Foot Orthosis (abbreviated: AFO) is a brace, worn on the lower leg and foot to support and hold the foot and ankle in the appropriate position. It can be made of plastic or composite materials or metal. Very often, it is used to treat a condition known as drop foot, by preventing it from occurring during the gait cycle. AFO’s are commonly used in the treatment of disorders that affect muscle function such as stroke, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, polio and multiple sclerosis. AFOs can be used either by providing support to the affected limb or by positioning a limb with tight, contracted muscles into a more optimal position. AFOs are also used to immobilize the ankle and foot in the presence of arthritis or fracture.
