AFO / SMO (abbreviated: AFO) is a brace, worn on the lower leg and foot to support and hold the foot and ankle in the appropriate position. It can be made of plastic or composite materials or metal. Very often, AFO / SMO is used to treat a condition known as drop foot, by preventing it from occurring during the gait cycle. AFO / SMO’s are commonly used in the treatment of disorders that affect muscle function, such as stroke, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, polio and multiple sclerosis. AFO / SMO’s can be used either by providing support to the affected limb or by positioning a limb with tight, contracted muscles into a more optimal position. AFO / SMO’s are also used to immobilize the ankle and foot in the presence of arthritis or fracture. We strive to provide the best orthotic solution for the patient’s condition by utilizing the best available materials. These may include high tech dynamic response composite materials, lightweight thermo-formable plastics or a neuro-prosthetic device such as the Walkaide when indicated. In doing so, we are assured of an optimal result.
SMO is the acronym for Supra-Malleolar Orthosis. Supra-Malleolar Orthosis, as with other orthoses, gets its name for the part of the body for which it encompasses. This orthosis supports the leg, just above the anklebones or malleoli. Supra-Malleolar Orthosis is considered the shortest of the Ankle Foot Orthoses (AFO's).
Supra-Malleolar Orthosis is designed to maintain a vertical, or neutral heel while also supporting the three arches of the foot. This can help improve balance and walking and also reduce discomfort.
